WWE's NXT brand puts on memorable show for sold-out crowd in Metro Detroit

WWE's NXT brand and its up and coming superstars put on quite the show Saturday, March 3 for a sold-out crowd at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.

The main events of the evening featured newcomer Velveteen Dream taking on Aleister Black, which was the rematch from the 2017 NXT rivalry of the year, and Candice LeRae and Johnny Gargano taking on NXT Champion Andrade "Cien" Almas and his manager Zelina Vega.

Black defeated the extremely charismatic Velveteen Dream in a back and forth match reminiscent of their first go-round at NXT TakeOver: WarGames back in November 2017.

LeRae and Gargano beat Almas and Vega in a mixed tag team match full of shenanigans that had the sold-out crowd intensely involved. Gargano and Almas are finishing up the final chapter of a months-long NXT feud, which recently saw the former put his NXT career on the line in a match featured on the WWE Network.

Heading into the show, NXT superstar Adam Cole spoke with MLive about what the brand and the Midwest-based wrestling fan base meant to him. For a recap of that interview, click here.

As for why fans should care about NXT, Cole said that it reminds him of a "rockstar rollercoaster ride" with an audience full of fans who love and adore pro wrestling. The smaller venues like the Royal Oak Music Theatre (as compared to Little Caesars Arena) presents a special atmosphere that Cole says takes the NXT Live Tour to the next level.

"NXT is something I really believe in and still do," Cole said. "This is made up of young passionate people that want to make a name for themselves.

"I wanted to be a part of WWE, and part of NXT first as if I went to Raw or SmackDown right away I would always wonder what NXT would have been like."

The show was not televised, but featured matches of the top talent from WWE's developmental brand. Also, the Royal Oak Music Theatre does not allow photography of any kind from the inside.

This show served as a precursor to WWE's return to Detroit with Monday Night Raw on Monday, March 13 at Little Caesars Arena.
