WWE-To-Fox Rumors Heat Up As NBCUniversal Could Be In For A Bidding War

LAS VEGAS, NV - JANUARY 08: WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon speaks at a news conference announcing the WWE Network at the 2014 International CES at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas on January 8, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The network will launch on February 24, 2014 as the first-ever 24/7 streaming network, offering both scheduled programs and video on demand. The USD 9.99 per month subscription will include access to all 12 live WWE pay-per-view events each year. CES, the world's largest annual consumer technology trade show, runs through January 10 and is expected to feature 3,200 exhibitors showing off their latest products and services to about 150,000 attendees. As UFC continues to negotiate with other networks in search of a new deal worth upwards of $450 million, Fox and WWE seem to have, at the very least, begun preliminary discussions regarding what would be a monumental television deal between two giants in the entertainment industry.

WWE leaving NBCUniversal would be nothing short of a disaster for USA Network, which is desperately clinging on to what's left of its cable dynasty. In 2017, USA Network celebrated its historic 12th straight year as the "No. 1 ad-supported cable network."

As impressive as that sounds, USA Network has been hurt by the rise of on-demand viewing habits, and it actually lost its stranglehold on the more prestigious "No. 1 basic cable network" crown after being surpassed by Fox News. With an average of 3.018 million viewers in 2017, WWE programming is a major reason why the USA Network was still able to tread water as a top-five basic cable network to end the year.

But after Fox met with WWE last summer as part of its television showcase, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is now reporting that not only is Fox interested in landing a television rights deal with WWE, it could also become a potential buyer.

WWE's 13-year relationship with USA Network and NBCUniversal could be in for its biggest test as Fox has reportedly emerged as a possible suitor for the pro wrestling juggernaut.
