Brock Lesnar Challenges Daniel Cormier At UFC 226 As WWE's Most Complicated Heel-Turn Continues

On Saturday morning, I penned an article predicting a surprise appearance by Brock Lesnar at UFC 226. All the ingredients were there. The WWE contract, one which permitted him to negotiate one UFC fight, coming due. The heavyweight main event. The heavyweights in that main event discussing Lesnar as a possible opponent.

Right on cue, Lesnar did not disappoint. The WWE Universal champion showed up at his anthropomorphic best to challenge new UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier—who defeated Stipe Miocic via first-round knockout—in a profanity-laced tirade that was somehow more provocative and entertaining than anything Paul Heyman has said on his behalf in the past year or so:

Said Lesnar:

I walked into this building and watched the heavyweight disasters from the beginning...Ngannou's a piece of [expletive], Miocic, the piece of [expletive], DC...I'm coming for you [expletive].

There are many different versions of Brock Lesnar, who made $6.5 million in 2017 according to Chris Smith of Forbes. There's Paycheck Brock LesnarGrumpy Brock LesnarUnbalanced Brock LesnarHappy Brock LesnarShuffling Brock Lesnar; Babyface Brock Lesnar; Heel Brock LesnarBloody Brock LesnarFighting Brock Lesnar. But Saturday night at UFC 226, Three-Piece Brock Lesnar showed up cageside accompanied by his good friend—and the best version of Brock Lesnar—Octagon Promo Brock Lesnar.

As WWE continues to put Lesnar at odds with its fanbase for holding the Universal Championship hostage, the worldwide leader was fully on board with promoting Lesnar's Las Vegas business trip. A story titled "Universal Champion Brock Lesnar to Challenge UFC Champion Daniel Cormier" is currently running on WWE.com.

WWE is singing a much different tune about Lesnar showing up as a guest at a UFC pay-per-view than the last time he did so at UFC 184, seemingly defiantly, after reportedly walking out on a Raw taping in 2015.

This time around, WWE is all too giddy to lean into the maddening (storyline) idea of its world champion potentially leaving the company, with title in tow, to resume his up-and-down UFC career.
