Ronda Rousey is already the subject of animosity among members of the WWE women's locker room.
The impressive performance of Nia Jax, and the in-ring return of Nikki Bella, at the 2018 Royal Rumble have already become afterthoughts as WWE rolls out the red carpet for Hot Ronda. Rousey's "Rowdy" t-shirt has already become WWEShop.com's third-best seller, right behind merchandise for Stone Cold Steve Austin and, of course, Rusev Day.
In addition to much-needed star power for its talented-but-thin women's division, Rousey's presence will also go a long way toward closing the gender pay gap in WWE. Main events featuring the former UFC bantamweight champion will be every bit as box office as any men's main event, if not more so.
Brandon Howard Thurston of Fightful suggested Rousey's mainstream appeal will prove invaluable during ongoing television rights negotiations, and Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that she's worth "millions" to the promotion so long as she doesn't quit before the new TV contract is signed in 2019. With WWE's stock consistently hitting all-time highs as it continues to gain leverage with multiple potential suitors, WWE's share price is likely to keep climbing as a bidding war looms within its biggest revenue center.
The Ronda Rousey effect is real, but during Monday's broadcast of Raw, both Nia Jax and Nikki Bella appeared to feel some type of way when WWE's social media account went into overdrive with several tweets promoting perhaps WWE's most prized acquisition in years.
Shortly after the Royal Rumble, WWE's social media account tweeted:
EXCLUSIVE: @RondaRousey offers her candid thoughts just moments after shocking the @WWEUniverse at @WWE
In response, Nikki Bella fired off this gem:
Wonder what all the 30 other women candid thoughts were too? N
#firsteverwomensroyalrumble
The following night during Raw, WWE's social media account continued:
UP NEXT: We relive the moment you've ALL been talking about... #RAW#RoyalRumble@RondaRousey
Nia Jax took things from there:
Cool she’s here....I guess 30 women making history can just be forgotten
Now, there's a lot to unpack here. Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't at least touch on the implied assumption behind any WWE social media feud: that it's either the product of a pre-determined work that will lead to a match, or it's another case of a WWE Superstar going into business for themselves to orchestrate said potential big-money match with arguably WWE's biggest mainstream star.
">Ronda Rousey, whose appearance at the conclusion of Sunday's Royal Rumble has become the talk of the town in sports entertainment, has already gotten her first taste of WWE's dog-eat-dog locker room.
